Darien Fawkes played by Vincent Ventresca

Until recently, Darien earned his living as a small-time thief. Then his criminal career was ironically interrupted by a detour onto the path of the straight-and-narrow.

Sentenced to life in prison for a crime he (mostly) didn't commit, Darien was transfered from jail to labratory when he agreed to be a guinea pig in a secret, government experiment. Because Darien's own brother is the head scientist in the experiment, Darien believed he was basically safe.

A gland that secretes a mysterious substance -- Quicksilver -- was implanted at the base of Darien's skull. The Quicksilver secretions enable him to become invisible at will, but they unexpectedly also degrade his higher brain functions, unleashing his dark impulses and pushing him towards insanity.

The inevitible destruction of Darien's mind can be only partially and temporarily suppressed by a counteragent, administered on a frequent basis by his government handlers. Consequently, Darien has struck an uneasy deal: the counteragent in return for serving a clandestine government agency as a secret operative.

But even without the degenerative effect of Quicksilver, Darien still struggles with his dark side. And he's a loose cannon to his bureaucratic handlers, who seem not entirely pure themselves.  -- scifi.com

Vince’s Bio

Born April 29, 1965 in Indianapolis Indiana. The youngest of 11 children, he graduated from Indiana University with a double major in theater and psychology.

After earning his B.A. in theatre and psychology from Indiana University, Ventresca began establishing his career as an actor. His long list of stage credits include productions of "The Prophets," "Ubu in Chains," "Choices," "The Dining Room," "Burn This," "A Man's Man," "Ubu Roi," "Oresteia," "The Visit," "Julius Caesar," "Ah! Wilderness," "Insignificance," "4-H Club" and "Eminent Domain."

In 1994, he received his big break when he won a small part in the CBS made-for-television movie "Menendez: A Killing in Beverly Hills." That project led to a slew of other acting ventures including the NBC miniseries "Degree of Guilt" in 1995. He also joined the casts of the short-lived TV series "Medicine Ball" on Fox and "Boston Common" on NBC. Both series went off the air after one season. In 1997, Ventresca made his film debut playing Mira Sorvino's love interest in "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion."

Shortly after, he returned to television in two more TV series: "Prey" for ABC and "Maggie Winters" for CBS, both of which were canceled. In addition, Ventresca has guest-starred twice on "Friends" as Fun Bobby and appeared in the independent films "Macarena," "Can't Stop Dancing," "The Learning Curve," "Love & Sex," "This Space Between Us" and "Madison," which was filmed in Madison, Ind.

Why acting?

The movie "Hoosiers" was being cast in Bloomington, and my mom said I should audition. The guy who got the part I auditioned for was a guy who I went to high school with, so I initially saw the movie for that reason. But while I was watching it, I saw what Gene Hackman was doing as far as the craft of acting goes, and it opened the door in my head. I said to myself, "This is really cool."

"I love Indiana, a beautiful, beautiful state, but there isn’t a whole lot of opportunity for actors there. But the funny thing is thinking about what would have happened if I had been a little bit better at playing basketball. I’m sure I wouldn’t have been an actor today." [imdb.com]

darien7.jpg (30758 bytes) Being "The Invisible Man"

"It sounds confusing when I try to explain the concept of the show, but it has it’s own perverse logic," he says, laughing. "When the Quicksilver gland in Fawke’s head is triggered by certain emotions, a strange substance is secreted through his sweat pores that renders him invisible. We’re all familiar with old movies showing the invisible man taking off his clothes, being wrapped in bandages and so on. We’re finding ways that viewers have never seen invisibility before."

The rangy actor is genuinely enthused about his new series, a rather rare experience for him.

"This show feels good, partly because it has certain retro qualities going back to ‘Batman,’ ‘Mannix,’ ‘Streets of San Francisco’ and ‘Wild, Wild West.’ It’s like we’re serving up a casserole of classic TV shows. Unlike some of my previous series – where we all went, ‘Oh, well, let’s finish out the order because it’s not going very far’ – ‘Invisible Man’ could run a long time. For the first time in years, I can’t wait to get to the set in the morning, even though I know I’m in for a 14-hour day."

On being QSM

Stage 5 Quicksilver Madness, a malady that, in "Money for Nothing" episode, brings Darien's dark side to light. "I got to play a guy who has no conscience," marvels Ventresca. "Usually, we see Darien save the day, and I was always interested in seeing him not do the right thing."

When asked about the invisible man's nasty alter ego reappearing Ventresca admits, "I miss him, I asked the writer when we're going to bring him back!"

Special effects
on "Invisible Man"

Ventresca’s Invisible job entails his having to occasionally wear colored contact lenses, which represent different stages of madness he can fall into if the invisibility gland starts poisoning his body.

"The red ones are soft and the silver ones are hard," he explains. "I used to think the red ones were painful, but after the silver ones, I could wear the red ones to bed. You should see the outtakes. I'm just dripping with tears. But I did make sure that I wasn't doing irreparable harm to my eyesight."

But Ventresca says the pain is worth the gain: "I love this job. As an actor, a lot of times you get stuck on jobs that you're not that crazy about, but I hope this show goes forever."

The other I-Man character, Vince’s hair

"I'm like Jackson Pollock with hair products," says Ventresca, who plays Darien Fawkes, a government secret agent who can turn invisible via a gland in his head. "I'm a child of the '80s, when gel and mousse were hip. I put a bunch of different stuff in my hands, whip it together, and whatever happens happens. We haven't spent a lot of time in Darien's bathroom, but if we do, I'm going to tell the props guy that I've got all of the products."

Being a Dad

While his parents had 11 offspring, Ventresca and his wife, Dianne, so far have just Benjamin, born in April 2000 and Rene Marie, born in late June, early July, 2002..

"It’s very exciting. He eats a lot during the day and sleeps almost all night, with my wife doing most of the work. The only bummer of sorts is that I work a lot, which means I only see him when he is sleeping early in the morning and late at night. On weekends, we sit and stare at each other. It’s great!"

"My son brings me to a different level of joy every day," marvels Ventresca, who's birthday is at the end of April. "It's like I learned how to truly smile for the first time."
